The Economy of Runet – Russia’s Technology Scene
On October 10th, 2012, a new research into ‘The Economy of Runet 2011-2012’ was presented at the Ria Novosti press centre in Moscow. Together with experts from different institutions, staff of the HSE participated in developing the methodology and implementation of the project. The research provides an in-depth report into the state of the of the internet economy, the dynamics of its development, structure and areas of growth and the obstacles it is facing.
Yaroslav Kuzminov, Rector of the HSE, explained the methodology of the study and the process of its implementation. The methods were developed by the Russian Association for Electronic Communications (RAEC) and the National Research University – Higher School of Economics. Key vectors of the research were agreed with the Russian Association of Communication Agencies (AKAR) and Boston Consulting Group (BCG).
For the purposes of the study the internet economy was divided into 11 markets, a system of classification and approaches to measuring the volumes of these subjects were developed. The project included in-depth interviews with various experts, field studies and surveys, and the key conclusions were confirmed with well known Runet market gurus.
A total of 282 experts took part in the research responding to questionnaires on the 11 markets. The selected methods ensure that the ‘Economy of Runet 2011-2012’ report is independent and applicable to the whole industry.
The total value across the eleven markets studied comprised 553.79 billion roubles in 2011. At the same time, the accumulated value of internet-dependent markets, presented in the report as a united ecosystem and including such economy segments as markets of infrastructure, communication, internet access, B2G/G2B and B2B trade platforms (which are not directly related to internet business and were not included in this research), plus the studied markets, exceeded 2.52 billion rubles at the end of 2011.
According to Riki Drori, Marketing Director at Google in the South East Europe, Middle East and Africa region, today the internet is a driver of development for the innovation economy and stimulates the appearance of not only new players on the existing markets, but also new markets themselves. ‘The more attention paid to the internet economy, and particularly to developing medium and small sized business in the net, the faster their further qualitative and quantitative growth will be’, she emphasized.
By the end of 2012, the average growth rate across all the studied market segments will be at least 30% up from the volumes of the previous year, surpassing the average growth rate of the Russian economy and some of its sectors.
The speakers wound up in agreement that Runet has not only penetrated all areas of life, business and public administration but has become that innovation economy everyone is talking about these days and needs to be the driver for Russia’s new economic development
